A scarce first state map by L.M. Steinberger that was originally published in 1680 and later reprinted just over 60 years later by Richter and Bernigeroth in 1741.
This double hemisphere map of the World shows many characteristics of maps of its time. including California as an island. and a continuous NE coast of Asia which reaches nearly to Alaska. An incomplete Australia is depicted but there is no suggestion of Antarctica. There are numerous Pacific islands including much of the western coastline of New Zealand. Several routes of 17th century explorers are delineated throughout the map.
The map has many decorative embellishments typical of late seventeenth century maps. including cherubim. illustrations of astronomy and surveying instruments. and globes. The background is taken from a map by Homann displaying natural phenomenon such as volcanoes. earthquakes. waterspouts and a rainbow.
Condition: This map is in A condition with minor foxing.
