Description
This book is the first collection of Loyalist scholarship to span the 13 independent states and the Florida and Canadian provinces that remained loyal to the Crown in the American Revolution. The Loyalists disrupted the colonial communities in which they lived in ways that helped define the Revolution. Loyalist garrison towns became a pathological environment of violence and suspicion, which brought out the worst in patriot, British, and Loyalist behavior. In Canada, Loyalist exiles tried to create model Anglo-American communities, but in the end had to jettison Loyalist ideology to claim a new British North American identity.

In recent decades, inspired in large part by the works of Robert Calhoon, scholars have shed more light on the Loyalists and their role in the American Revolution. This collection of essays, which Calhoon helped edit, builds on that legacy. There are excellent pieces here that shed light on the Floridas, Connecticut, New York, the Carolinas, Canada, Virginia, and New York. Some of the high points include Carole Troxler’s continued strong work on East Florida, a fascinating piece on an obscure Christian community in Connecticut from Jean Hankins, and Cyntia Edelberg returning to Loyalist poet Jonathan Odell and comparing him with Philip Freneau. An excellent collection from start to finish. Highly recommended.
