Description

By:  John Melish / Jean Alexandre Buchon

Date: 1825 (published) Paris

Dimensions: 16.75 x 21 inches (42.5 x 53.5 cm)

This is an authentic antique map of the United States with portions of Mexico and Canada. by Jean Alexandre Buchon. The map is from the French edition of Carey & Lea's American Atlas and was published in Paris in the year 1825.

This is an interesting map of the United States during an intense period of westward expansion. The map includes the territories of Arkansas. Michigan. and Northwest (Wisconsin & Minnesota). and extends just west of the Rockies to include the vast Oregon Territory as well as Mexico. which at the time included Texas and extended as far north as the 40th parallel. An impressive amount of detail is shown with regard to the reaches of the Missouri River as thousands of pioneers. fur trappers. and traders were flooding the region. Numerous Native American villages are noted throughout the map. with the vast majority located west of the Mississippi.

The area of today's Plains states is labeled Grand Desert Americain. derived from Stephen Long's important expedition in 1819. Present-day Texas. New Mexico. and Arizona are shown as possessions of Mexico. so that area is sparsely mapped. The original drafting of this map was done by the famous John Melish. whose work was bringing the state of American cartography up to the high level. found only in Europe.  This map presented the best information on the United States to date. and it would have been of much interest to the audience in Europe.

Condition:  This bold map is in A condition with original hand color and full margins on all sides.
