By: Leslie Carr / Air Ministry

Date: 1940-42 (circa) England

Dimensions: 30.5 x 40 inches (77.5 x 101.5 cm)

This is a striking example of a scarce WWII British RAF tactical air combat diagram. which was used as an instructional poster for pilot training. The poster was drawn by Leslie Carr. who was known for his technical and detailed illustrations. It was produced by the Air Ministry. which was responsible for the operation of the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The diagram shows a British aircraft engaging a German bomber. likely a Dornier Do 17. from the rear. The caption at the bottom warns pilots. DON'T GIVE the REAR GUNNER a 'SITTER'. emphasizing the danger of approaching or attacking an enemy aircraft from a position where the rear gunner can easily target the attacking plane.

Historical Context and Purpose of the Diagram

During World War II. air combat tactics were rapidly evolving. and one of the critical lessons for fighter pilots was how to engage enemy bombers effectively while minimizing risk to themselves. One of the dangers faced by fighter pilots was the rear gunner of bombers. who was in a position to defend against attacking aircraft. particularly those approaching from behind.

This diagram was likely used in training sessions to educate pilots on the importance of not disengaging from a fight carelessly or attacking from a predictable angle. The warning Don't disengage in a haphazard manner is a reminder to pilots that pulling out of an attack at the wrong moment could leave them vulnerable to the bomber's rear gunner. who would have a clear shot.

These types of instructional materials played a crucial role in the training programs of the RAF and allied air forces. helping to prepare pilots for the complex and dangerous nature of air warfare during World War II. Today. they serve as a unique. visual representation of military and aviation history.

Condition: This poster is in very fine condition with some loss to the margin at lower left and some very minor staining within the image. most notably a vertical line near-center. The poster has been professionally linen backed for preservation and presentation purposes. a completely reversible process.
