This splendid large scale sea chart is by Jean-René de Verdun. a French scientist. naval officer and explorer who participated in both the Seven Years War and the American Revolutionary War. The chart depicts the famous Kattegat (cat's throat) Strait which connects the Baltic and North Seas. The strait covers an area of nearly nine thousand square miles. is about 140 miles long. varies in width from approximately 40 to 90 miles and has an average depth of 80-90 feet.
The chart is highly detailed with toponyms for cities. islands. ports and villages. Depth soundings are plentiful throughout the chart. Shoals and shallows are clearly denoted. Rhumb lines radiate from a large number of points. The decorative title cartouche features Neptune. a mermaid playing a harp. and two allegorical figures. A Danish royal seal is directly below the cartouche.
Condition: This large map with recent hand coloring is in very fine condition with some wrinkling in places throughout the image.
