This Ogilby engraving depicts an idol of the Aztec god Viztlipuztlion mounted on a magnificent high altar of a temple as worshippers come to pay homage and perform rituals. Indigenous people fill the scene in their traditional garb. A large wooden stockade is seen in the background.
This view appeared in John Ogilby's seminal atlas America: Being the Latest. and Most Accurate Description of the New World. published in London in 1671. Ogilby's work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus' Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld… published in Amerstdam. although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views.
Condition: This hand colored engraving is in A condition with slight staining on the verso which is visible in the border of the front of the map. A nice. crisp impression.
