Description

By: Irwin Caplan

Date: 1968 (dated) Seattle. WA

Dimensions: 37.75 x 28.5 inches (96 x 72.5 cm)

This is a scarce pictorial bird's-eye-view of Seattle by Irwin Caplan. published by the Seattle-based department store Frederick & Nelson in 1968.

This imaginative illustration offers a eccentric take on the Emerald City with its lively harbor. hills. and towering skyscrapers that include the Space Needle. and the Seafirst Building flying a flag that reads Big Daddy. Automotive and foot traffic is abundant and six inset illustration offer a closer look into the activity of Seattle. These illustrations include the Public City Market. City Center and the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge. to name a few.

Above the city we find a jet towing a banner that reads Boeing Job No 50327. which is a obvious nod to Boeing Company which was based in Seattle from 1916 to 2001 when it moved its headquarters to Chicago. in the foreground. we find a comical bunch of beachgoers and a totem pole. representing the indigenous foundations of the Pacific Northwest.

The work is very reminiscent of works by Jim Michaelson who did a similar poster of San Francisco that was published by Trend Graphics and Sparta Graphics the same year. Both are printed on a yellow heavy paper stock and feature a metallic sheen that glistens when viewed under light from the right angle.

Condition: This vintage poster is in B+ condition with a few minor stress lines that do not distract from the overall eye-appeal.
