An original chromolithograph view of Constantinople as it would have appeared in the late 19th century. The view shows the Golden Horn from a unique angle with a myriad of mosques making the skyline of this ancient city. Constantinople was the de facto capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. i.e.. the Byzantine Empire. The city featured here is the capital of what was then the Ottoman Empire. It would officially adopt the name Istanbul in 1930.
This view is one of sixteen depictions of international cities that appeared in William Collins's The Complete Atlas. Consisting of One Hundred and Twenty Maps of Modern. Historical. Classical. and Physical Geography. published out of Glasgow in 1878.
